Networking

A network links two or more computer components together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software. Utilities such as the Internet, printers, scanners, and computers can be connected.

A network lets you transfer files, pictures, and information without using any kind of disk or external drive. Most businesses decide to use a network because they have more than one computer and want to share information and computer components.

Taking time to configure the security features of your network is essential. Here are a few things you can do to protect your wireless network:

Secure your wireless router or access point administration interface. This sounds fancy but all it means is to change the default password to your router as soon as you set it up.

Don’t broadcast your network’s name. Most routers automatically and continually broadcast the network’s name. This will make your network visible to any wireless systems within range of it. Turn off this broadcast, known as SSID, to make it invisible to passers-by.

Enable WPA encryption. WPA is Wi-Fi Protected Access and it protects your passwords. It is built into Windows XP and other modern wireless operating systems.

• Use Mac filtering. If you use a Mac computer, you will need to use Mac filtering. Unlike Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, Mac addresses are unique to specific network adapters, so by turning on Mac filtering you can limit network access to only your systems.

Following these easy steps can ensure that no one intercepts your Wi-Fi traffic.
